Challenging Energies

A skilled practitioner investigates presence of disturbing forces. Some of these may be described in everyday language as “ghosts” or “hauntings”. Some may be classified otherwise. It is important that the practitioner has an inclusive overview of what might be disturbing the peace for some physical inhabitants of a place. Below are described some possible candidates a practitioner might find.

Lost/ Stuck Spirits

The shamanic understanding of death includes the principle that when a soul leaves its residential physical body, it begins a journey “home”. Sometimes the soul becomes lost or stuck, consequently is unable to find their way home, for one of a number of possible reasons. The shamanic practitioner aims to meet such souls and instigate guidance so that they can go home. The practitioner does not seek to know, or assume, where “home” is to a lost soul. The practitioner facilitates guidance so the soul is welcomed home by loving, compassionate spirits such as ancestors, elders who have already passed, or other benevolent spirits who take on the role of guide for the remaining transition.

Spirits of Nature

It’s a universal shamanic understanding that everything has a spirit, whether that be a moving, breathing being, a tree, a rock, and so on. It is also a principle that everything has a home. It is not unusual that nature spirits will be disturbed by some human activities. This can include clearing of sites for building, etc. Sometimes nature spirits will move away from a site and there is no disturbance from them. Sometimes they do not move away, for whatever reason. This can bring disturbance to the physical inhabitants of that place. In such cases, the practitioner will seek to work with the nature spirit to find a solution that suits both itself and the occupants of the place.

Elemental Beings

Many shamans understand there are beings who live, usually unseen with the eyes, in realms which humans, associate with the classical elements of Earth, Air, Water, Fire. Within each elemental realm, there are families of inhabitants often known as elemental beings. Few people can physically see these beings, some people can sense them but not see them, some people are not aware or accepting of them at all. Whether one can see them, sense them, or deny them, their effects upon the physical realm may still be noticed. A good example of elemental beings comes from stories passed through the ages of “little people”. Such stories are found in many different cultures, such as in Nisse, Tomte, Leprechaun, Gnome, etc. — all of which are Earth Elementals. In folk lore, it is suggested elemental beings can be either helpful or disruptive, depending on whether they feel looked after, safe, respected, etc. The shamanic practitioner seeks to meet elemental beings to find out the best ways for them to be appeased or otherwise become contented. Sometimes a physical inhabitant of a dwelling can take simple steps to ensure elemental beings and themselves can live in the same place in harmony. If such steps are taken, the beings will tend to become beneficial guardians of the place rather than showing disturbing behaviours.
